Celebrities, Red Carpet, Theme and the Oak Tree Centerpiece.
The Met Gala is affectionately defined as “fashion’s biggest night out,” usually it takes place in the first Monday of May, but due to the pandemic this year has been planned for Monday 13th of September. Again, after been cancelled in 2020, The Metropolitan Museum of New York has been full of celebrities, journalists and Anna Wintour‘s privileged co-chairs.
The theme was “In America: a Lexicon of Fashion”, which could remind of cultural diversity, street style, the amazing world of Hollywood and some fashion icons, such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, who is from England, but remembered as an American iconic actress.
Every guest had to elaborate the theme and come up with a beautiful outfit. It is generally known that Met Gala looks never let us down, this years outfits confirmed this believe.
Kendall Jenner wore a modern version of the dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in My fair lady, designed by Givenchy.
Rihanna walked down the carpet with a black, chic, oversize coat designed by Balenciaga, which reminded us of a typical street style outfit.
Moreover, Billie Eilish, whose go-to red carpet looks are usually oversize jackets and beg trousers, chose a pink-peach barbie dress, which stand out her decollete.
Unfortunately, some of the usual guests haven’t attended the Met Ball, but they have been replaced by new entrances. Timothée Chalamet wore a pair of Converse shoes to be comfy.
While Lil Nas X was breathtaking wearing his three gold pieces Versace look.
In addition with the actor and the singer have been present also the influencer Emma Chamberlain in Louis Vuitton and tiktoker Addison Rae in a vintage piece GuccixTomFord. No doubts about their beauty, but many criticizes have been made about the reason of their presence: it was ridiculous for some people seeing those types of celebrities participating in an exclusive fashion event like the Met Ball, but as it is generally known, those workers are getting more and more associated to fashion and publicity because of social media importance.
Anyway, when it comes to Met Gala looks, what comes to mind is not only sophisticate fabrics and over the top red carpet entrances, but also deep messages represented by dresses, for example Kim Kardashian has worn a total black suit, which reminds to the conditions of women in Afghanistan, who are completely covered apart from their eyes. AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, member of the American Democratic Party, has decided to bring as a social issue the economic equality by wearing a white dress with a red message “Tax the rich” at the back.
THE OAK TREE CENTERPIECE
The oak tree is the international tree of United States of America, which stands for ethnic diversity in the country since there are 60 different species of it.
The sculptor, Raúl Àvila, has created an massive autumnal oak tree circled by wheat fields made with recycle materials, as the centerpiece of the hall. Since, for the first time, the Met Gala took place in autumn and not in spring and after an exhausting lockdown, the artist had to adapt his ideas to the period we were living in.
